Overview: Learn how to manage the second appointment for partial and complete denture combo cases, including wax rim adjustments and clinical marking.
Recommended Materials
Ensure the following materials are available before starting the appointment:
Heat source
Waxing instruments (spatula, carver, etc.)
Baseplate wax
PVS light body impression material
PVS blue bite impression material
Measurement tools (Willis gauge or metal ruler)
Note: If the patient experiences fit issues with the try-in framework, the practitioner must capture new intraoral scans.
Provide Feedback and Receive Return Label
Partial and denture combination cases must be mailed back to Dandy.
Open the specific order on Dandy Chairside.
Select Provide Feedback and complete the form.
Click Submit Feedback to generate and receive the shipping label.
Prepare the case for physical return following the provided shipping instructions. Note: If the try-in framework has fit issues, you must capture new intraoral scans.
Adjust Maxillary Wax Rim
Adjust Lip Support
Add or remove wax from the labial surface of the maxillary rim until the nasolabial angle is approximately 90 degrees. Ensure the philtrum sits naturally after adjustments.
Set Incisal Length
Adjust the maxillary rim so 1–2 mm of wax is visible below the upper lip at rest. Use "F" and "V" sounds to verify the incisal edge of the rim touches the wet line of the lower lip.
Level the Occlusal Plane
Use a Fox Plane to verify the maxillary rim is parallel to the interpupillary line from the frontal view. Ensure the maxillary rim is parallel to the ala-tragus line from the lateral view.
Prepare Mandibular Wax Rim
Seat the lower partial wax rim and verify the rim does not interfere with remaining natural teeth. Adjust the lower rim height so the rim is level with the corners of the mouth anteriorly and positioned halfway up the Retromolar Pad posteriorly.
Determine Vertical Dimension of Occlusion (VDO)
Measure Rest Position (VDR): Mark dots on the patient's nose and chin. Ask the patient to relax or say "Emma" to find the Vertical Dimension at Rest.
Calculate VDO: Subtract 2–4 mm of freeway space from the measured VDR.
Adjust to VDO: Trim the mandibular wax rim until the patient’s dots measure the calculated VDO when the rims and natural teeth make contact.
Record Centric Relation and Bite Registration
Rehearse the Bite: Guide the patient into Centric Relation (CR) by having the patient touch their tongue to the roof of the mouth while closing gently.
Cut Notches: Carve "V" shaped notches in the posterior wax of both the maxillary and mandibular rims to retain registration material.
Inject Material: Apply bite registration material, such as Blue Mousse, and guide the patient into the practiced CR until the rims meet.
Define Clinical Marks and Select Tooth Shade
Use a wax carver to scribe the Midline, Canine Lines (aligned with the Ala Tragus Line), and the High Smile Line onto the wax rim. Select the tooth shade and style with the patient to ensure the selection matches any remaining natural opposing teeth.
