How to have your scans & prep analyzed by AI Scan Review
Step 1: Start a single-unit crown case
- Set up a single-unit anterior or posterior crown case in Chairside.
- Note: AI Scan Review will only run for single-unit crown cases. Support for additional workflows is coming soon.
- Click here for a step-by-step walkthrough of the crown workflow.
Step 2: Complete all required scans
- Capture needed scans by following prompts in Chairside, including:
- Lower arch scan
- Upper arch scan
- Bite scan
- Prep scan
Step 3: Proceed to 'Review' menu
- Once all scans are captured, navigate to the Review menu.
- AI Scan Review will begin automatically (shown below). No clicks needed to initiate.
- Note: analysis takes ~30 seconds. This may vary based on internet speed,
- What AI Scan Review checks on your prep:
- Occlusal clearance
- Undercuts
- Margin line visibility (to generate a proposed margin line)
Step 4: View results
- If no issues are detected: a message confirms you're prep is lab-ready.
- We recommend double-checking your prep and scans before placing your order even with this confirmation.

If issues are detected: a notification appears on the right side of your screen with details and next steps.
Fixing an Occlusal Clearance Issue
Step 1: Click into the alert

Click the clearance alert to see specific feedback and step-by-step guidance on how to fix the issue.
Step 2: Review areas of prep highlighted in purple
- If there’s insufficient clearance (based on your prep, material, and bite scan), affected areas will be shaded in purple.
Step 3: Choose how to proceed

You can:

Re-scan after refining the prep in your patient's mouth.

Proceed as-is (additional information in Step 4 below).

After a re-scan, AI Scan Review will re-check the prep and notify you if the issue is resolved.
Step 4 (Optional): Selecting 'Proceed as-is'
- Select 'Proceed as-is' if you'd like to proceed with your order despite the alert.
- Follow the guided prompts about why you are proceeding as-is.
- Note: if you agree with the alert but still need to proceed, a reduction coping will be added to your order to support the seating appointment. An additional charge is added to your order.
Fixing a Detected Undercut
Step 1: Click into the undercut alert

An alert will appear if AI flags a margin line undercut. Click it for more information.
Step 2: Review areas of prep highlighted in purple

Your scan will show:

Purple overlay: Potential overhang

Red line: Margin line with visibility impact

Blue arrow: Proposed path of insertion (POI)

Step 3: Choose how to proceed

You’ll be given three options:

Option A: Refine the AI margin line

Click “Open Margin tool” to manually adjust the line.

Drag dots along the margin to reposition and fine-tune it. (Margin visibility impacts accuracy.)

Option B: Refine your prep and re-scan

Make adjustments to your prep, then select “Re-prep & rescan.”

After rescanning, AI will reanalyze.

Option C: Proceed as-is

Continue without making changes.

If you agree with the issue but still want to proceed, a reduction coping will be added to your case for seating support. Additional fees apply.

What is AI Scan Review?
AI Scan Review is a tool in Chairside that automatically analyzes preps and scans for potential issues—like undercuts and insufficient occlusal clearance. If issues are detected, you'll receive step-by-step visual guidance on how to resolve.
Which cases are eligible for AI Scan Review?
Currently, AI Scan Review is only available for single-unit anterior and posterior crown cases. It does not yet support other lab products.
Where can I access AI Scan Review?
You’ll find AI Scan Review within Chairside during the Review step of your workflow.
Do I need to activate or click anything to start AI Scan Review's analysis?
No, AI Scan Review starts automatically once you reach the Review menu after completing your scans.
How long does it take for AI Scan Review to analyze my scans?
On average, AI Scan Review completes its analysis in under 30 seconds. This may vary depending on your internet connection.
What happens if AI detects a problem with my prep?
You’ll see a side panel alerting you to the issue. Depending on what’s found, you might see:
- Purple shading on your scan, showing where the issue exists
- Red margin line to indicate affected visibility
- Blue vector line for the proposed path of insertion (POI)
You’ll also get step-by-step visual guidance on how to resolve the issue before moving forward.
What are my options if a problem is flagged?
You can choose to:
- Refine your prep and re-scan
- Refine the margin line using the Margin tool
- Proceed as-is with or without a reduction coping (note: additional charges apply if reduction coping is added)
Can I ignore the alert if I disagree?
Yes, you can proceed with your workflow by selecting the 'Proceed as-is' option.
What if the AI margin line looks incorrect?
You can always adjust, redraw, or remove the AI-generated margin line. If the system had difficulty identifying a clean margin, a yellow banner will notify you.
Why don’t I see AI Scan Review in my Chairside workflow?
If you're not seeing it, your case might not meet the current eligibility criteria (e.g., it's not a single-unit crown). Alternatively, your practice may not yet have access—AI Scan Review is being gradually rolled out to a limited group of practices at first.
Why is AI Scan Review only detecting undercuts on my laptop?
During this limited release, some practices might have access to only a single portion of AI Scan Review. This is part of our early testing process. The entire tool will be available soon.
