Create implant-supported overdentures from existing cases

Overview: This guide outlines the workflow for creating implant-supported overdentures in Chairside using an existing denture as a clinical reference.

Select patient and product

  1. On the Chairside homescreen, click Start.

  2. Enter the patient’s first and last name.

  3. Select Order Something New for existing patients or finish details for new patients.

  4. Select Create and Continue.

  5. Select Dentures, then click Overdenture.

  6. Select Yes to use the existing denture for bite and vertical dimension.

  7. Select Yes for an exact copy, or No to provide specific change instructions.

  8. Select Implant-Supported and choose the relevant arch.

NOTE: If this is a refabrication order, please refer to this article: How To Refabricate an Order.

Enter implant information

  1. Select the approximate areas of implant locations.

  2. Choose the locator system (Locator, Locator Fixed, Locator R-TX, or Other).

  3. Enter the implant manufacturer, system, platform size, and cuff height.

  4. If restorations have different specifications, use the toggle switch on the right to enter unique data for each site.

Capture clinical photographs

Capture these images while the patient wears the overdenture before beginning the scan:

  • Natural Smile: One head-on photo.

  • Profile: One photo from each side while smiling.

  • Cheek Retractors: One head-on photo with retractors in place.

Prepare the overdenture for scanning

Evaluate the fit of the current overdenture. If the overdenture is loose, you must perform the Impression Capture Procedure described below. If the overdenture fits well, proceed directly to scanning.

Capture the intaglio impression

Follow these steps if the overdenture requires a reline for an accurate fit:

  1. Clean and dry the intaglio surface of the overdenture.

  2. Apply a thin, even layer of light body impression material to the intaglio.

  3. Place the overdenture in the patient's mouth using firm, even pressure.

  4. Instruct the patient to perform functional movements of the cheeks and tongue.

  5. Wait for the material to set completely before removal.

Process the impression and adjust VDO

  1. Gently remove the overdenture by relieving the suction at the posterior buccal border.

  2. Evaluate the impression for voids or pulls; repeat the impression if necessary.

  3. Trim excess material from the tooth surfaces.

  4. Confirm the vertical dimension of occlusion (VDO) and adjust the overdenture as needed.

Record the occlusal relationship

  1. Evaluate the patient's bite for discrepancies in the plane of occlusion or various curves.

    • The plane of occlusion
    • The curve of Spee
    • The curve of Wilson
    • The incisal curve
  2. Once the patient demonstrates a repeatable bite, apply bite registration material to the occlusal surfaces of the mandibular teeth.

  3. Instruct the patient to bite down into their most natural position.

  4. Confirm the VDO is correct and trim excess material from the buccal and facial surfaces.

  5. Click Start Scanning in the Chairside software to begin the digital capture.
