Overview: This article provides a comprehensive guide on how to capture dental arch scans, utilize software tools to modify data, and review final scans for accuracy before sharing them with patients.
Capture Dental Arch Scans
Follow the recommended order below to ensure the software processes dental data correctly:
Lower Arch: Follow an occlusal, buccal, then lingual scan path and click Next.
Upper Arch: Follow an occlusal, buccal, then lingual scan path and click Next.

Bite Scans: Capture at least four teeth and 2–3mm of gingiva to ensure accurate bite registration.
Review Scans: Click Review Scans to check for missing or distorted areas.
Manual Alignment: Align bite scans manually if the software does not automatically align the bites.
Utilize Scanning Software Tools
Use the tools located at the bottom of the scan pages to modify the digital impressions:
Reset: Use Reset to delete the entire current scan.
Trim: Use Trim to remove only a specifically selected area of the scan.
Lock: Use Lock to fix the selected area in place to prevent further changes.
Center: Use Center to align the scan to a standard occlusal view.
Stone: Use Stone to convert the scan appearance to a monochromatic stone view.
Swap: Use Swap to trade the current scan data with a different selected arch scan.
Review Scan Accuracy and Quality
Once the scans are captured, use the review interface to verify the quality of the data:
Single View: Click Single to view both the upper and lower arches in occlusion.
Side by Side View: Click Side by Side to view the upper and lower arches individually at the same time.
Complete View: Click Complete to view a combination of the Single and Side by Side perspectives.
Compare Scans: Click Compare to view the current scans next to a previous set of completed scans.
Present Mode: Click Present to view the scans in full-screen mode.
HD Scans: Click HD Scans to view the scans in High Definition.
Occlusal Clearance: Click Clearance to view a heat map indicating the occlusal clearance levels.
Annotate Scans: Click Annotate Scans to draw, circle, or add text directly onto the scan data.
Complete the Order or Re-scan
After the review is complete, choose one of the following actions:
Start Ordering: Select Start Ordering to proceed with the case.
Re-scan: If a scan looks poor, click A Scan Looks Bad? Re-scan It, then click the Pencil Icon next to the specific scan to retake it.
Share Scans with Patients
Use the sharing features to provide digital scans to the patient:
Click Share Scans With Patient.
Confirm the practice information if this is the first time the practice is sharing scans.
Write a short message to the patient explaining the scan results.
Select a delivery method: Link, Printout, or QR Code.
Click Share.
