Overview

Your dental health provides important insights into your overall well-being—including your sleep. During routine visits, your dentist may identify signs of sleep apnea and guide you through a simple, at-home diagnostic and treatment process.

Step 1: Initial Consultation

During your exam, your dentist may identify signs of sleep apnea such as:

  • Tooth grinding
  • Airway anatomy concerns
  • Tongue size

If appropriate, you may qualify for an at-home sleep test.

What happens next:

  • Digital scan of your teeth and bite (quick and comfortable)
  • You leave the same day with a sleep test ring

Step 2: At-Home Sleep Test

Getting Started

  • Dandy will contact you to collect required forms and verify insurance
  • You will upload:
    • Driver’s license
    • Medical insurance card

Setting Up Your Sleep Study

  • You’ll receive an email from SleepImage with a Patient ID
  • Download the SleepImage app (Apple Store or Google Play) using the link provided
  • Charge your sleep test ring

Taking the Test

  • Connect the ring to the app
  • Wear it for two consecutive nights
  • The ring automatically tracks your sleep and sends your results to a certified sleep medicine doctor

Getting Results

  • Data is reviewed by a sleep physician
  • Diagnosis is typically provided within ~48 hours after completion
  • Results are shared via email

Note: A live telehealth consultation is only required if your insurance mandates it.

Step 3: Insurance & Approval

Before treatment begins:

  • Insurance Verification: Completed and shared with your diagnosis
  • Pre-Authorization: Confirms medical necessity (if required)
  • Cost Estimate: Clear breakdown of coverage and out-of-pocket costs

Step 4: Custom Device Creation

If you choose to proceed:

  • A custom Mandibular Advancement Device (MAD) is ordered

Timeline:

  • 2–3 weeks for manufacturing and delivery

Step 5: Final Fitting & Treatment

  • Return to your dental office for fitting
  • A dentist ensures comfort and proper function
  • Return the sleep test ring

FAQs
Getting Started & Telehealth

  • How do I start the Sleep test?
    • To begin, you will receive a text message with a link to a portal to submit your medical intake forms.
    • Once you complete the health intake form and it has been reviewed, SleepImage will send you an email with a unique Patient ID and a link to download the app, required to unlock your sleep test. 
    • Follow the instructions in the SleepImage App regarding how to start your sleep test.
       
  • What information do I need to provide?
    • You will be asked to upload a copy of your driver's license and medical insurance card via a secure portal.
       
  • How do I receive my diagnosis?
    • Sleep MDs will review your study results and provide a formal diagnosis asynchronously in around 48hrs, post sleep test completion.
    • You will only need to attend a virtual consultation if your insurance company specifically requires it. If it does not require a virtual consultation, your Diagnosis will be sent to you via Email and you will not need to meet with an MD at any point.
       
  • Do I have to pay for telehealth consultation?
    • No, it is free of charge. 
       

The Home Sleep Test

  • Do I have to pay for the sleep test?
    • It is at the discretion of your dentist.
       
  • How should I care for the sleep test device?
    • You can simply use sanitizing wipes to clean the rings after use.
       
  • What are my responsibilities regarding the device?
    • You are responsible for returning the device to the dental office promptly.
    • Please note that you may be held financially responsible for any devices that are lost, stolen, or broken while in your possession.
       
  • What if I keep the device too long?
    • The office relies on these devices to treat other patients, so you may be charged a fee for delays in returning the equipment, depending on each practice’s policy.
       
  • I wore the ring last night but forgot to download the app. Did you get my test results?
    • If you did not download the app then your results were not recorded. Please connect the ring via Bluetooth after you’ve downloaded the app and input your patient ID. Hit start when you are about to sleep and stop when you wake up for two nights. The nights do not need to be consecutive.
    • After two nights the results are sent to our Sleep Medicine MD for review.
    • Your results will be shared with you within 48 hours.


Insurance & Costs

  • How much will treatment cost?
    • Your final costs depend on your specific insurance coverage. Dandy will email you the cost of the sleep appliance in the same email with your diagnosis.
       
  • Will I be charged if I decide not to pursue treatment?
    • You will not be charged if you do not want to pursue treatment.
       
  • When is my insurance verified?
    • Your insurance benefit will be relayed to you together with your Diagnosis, so that you can decide if you would like to pursue treatment.
       
  • Does this program accept Medicare or Medicaid?
  • At this time, telehealth services and medical billing through this program are not available for Medicare or Medicaid patients.


Your Custom Sleep Appliance

  • How long does it take to get my appliance?
    • Once ordered, your custom device is manufactured and shipped within approximately 2 to 3 weeks.
       
  • When will I start seeing results?
    • While individual experiences vary and are highly dependent on compliance, patients may notice improved sleep quality within 14 days of consistent use. Your dentist may continue to fine-tune the device's advancement over several weeks to find the "sweet spot" that offers maximum effectiveness with total comfort.
