Overview: This guide provides step-by-step instructions for seating, cleaning, and maintaining your custom-made Dandy sleep apnea device to ensure comfort and longevity.
A Dandy sleep apnea appliance is a type of dental device used to treat snoring and mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea. It is also known as a mandibular advancement device or mandibular repositioning device. Dandy appliances are custom-made to fit your mouth and are designed to be as comfortable and unobtrusive as possible.
Seat the Sleep Apnea Device
Follow these steps to properly position the sleep apnea device in your mouth.
Prepare for Insertion
Before inserting the sleep apnea device, brush and floss the teeth. Rinse your mouth with water to ensure good oral hygiene and prevent food particles from becoming trapped under the sleep apnea device.
Position the Device (Herbst® Mechanism)
The Herbst® mechanism is a one-piece construction held together by two adjustment mechanisms.
Place the upper piece of the appliance in your mouth.
Bite down gently to position the upper piece properly.
Ensure the adjustment mechanisms on the outer area of the device are properly aligned.
Position the Device (Dorsal Mechanism)
The Dorsal mechanism is a two-piece design with separate upper and lower portions.
Insert the upper piece of the Dorsal device first.
Once the upper piece is secure, insert the lower piece.
Breathe through your nose and verify the device is seated comfortably. Note: Your dentist will adjust the metal connectors to hold the lower jaw in the correct position.
Clean and Maintain the Device
Regular cleaning prevents odors and damage to the sleep apnea device.
