Metal Bridge Instructions for Use (IFU)

Overview: This article provides the Instructions for Use (IFU) for Dandy metal bridges, including indications, contraindications, clinical adjustment guidelines, and patient maintenance.

Metal Bridge Clinical Indications

Metal bridges are fabricated using digital technology for a precise fit to restore worn, carious, or broken dentition. Metal bridges serve to:

  • Replace one or more missing permanent teeth by spanning the edentulous space.

  • Restore the form, function, and esthetics of natural dentition.

  • Provide occlusal stability and maintain proper interarch relationships.

Clinical Contraindications and Warnings

Contraindications

Clinicians should use metal bridges with caution in patients with uncontrolled periodontal disease, oral lesions, or severe bone resorption.

Metal Sensitivity Warning

This device contains metal, including nickel. Clinicians must inform patients with metal allergies or sensitivities of these compounds prior to treatment. Rare allergic reactions or localized tissue irritation may occur.

Fitting and Cementation Procedures

Clinicians must follow these steps for successful bridge placement:

  1. Test Fit: Evaluate the restoration for adequate fit and aesthetics.

  2. X-ray Verification: Take an X-ray if margins are not visible to ensure proper adaptation.

  3. Adjust High Spots: Use articulating paper to identify and mark areas for adjustment.

  4. Air Abrasion: Metal restorations require air abrasion with alumina particles to enhance cement adhesion.

Cement recommendations

Adjustment Guidelines

To prevent micro-fractures and maintain material integrity, follow these technical specifications:

  • Speed and Pressure: Operate the bur at high speed with minimal pressure.

  • Coolant: Use constant water and air spray to maintain temperature; air-only adjustments are not recommended.

  • Bur Selection: Use a fine-grit diamond bur. Use a football-shaped bur for occlusal/lingual surfaces and a tapered bur for buccal/lingual surfaces.

Patient Maintenance and Hygiene

Clinicians should advise patients on the following daily care routines:

  • Brushing: Brush twice daily using a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste.

  • Flossing: Use a floss threader daily to remove debris from under the bridge.

  • Dietary Habits: Avoid sticky or abrasive foods and limit sugary intake to prevent decay at restorative margins.

Disposal and Recycling

Precious Metal Restoration Disposal

Restorations containing precious metals (such as gold alloy) should be returned to Dandy if a refabrication is required. Alternatively, these can be recycled through specialized dental refiners.

Non-Precious Metal Restoration Disposal

Non-precious restorations do not need to be returned to Dandy for refabrication. These may be disposed of through scrap metal dealers or local industrial recycling.

Additional Information

  • If the patient experiences any adverse events, such as pain or irritation, they should contact your practice immediately.
  • Metal bridges have a limited warranty, which may vary depending on the manufacturer.
  • Smoking with restorations can cause discoloration
