Troubleshoot Slow Scanning on Dandy Scanners

Overview: Learn how to identify and resolve slow scanning speeds on Trios wired scanners used with Dandy laptops or Dandy Carts.

Identify Scanning Performance Issues

Before troubleshooting, determine if the Trios scanner is performing slowly or not capturing data at all. Note that internet connection affects order submission but does not impact the scanner's ability to capture images.

Verify Slow Scanning

Slow scanning occurs when the Trios scanner clicks slowly without a red rectangle appearing on the screen.

Verify No Image Capture

No capture occurs when the Trios scanner does not pick up images at all. If the Trios scanner captures no images, refer to the "Troubleshoot Dandy Scanner Image Capture Issues" article.

Troubleshoot Scanner Power Source

Low power can cause the Trios scanner to operate slowly. Follow these steps to ensure the equipment has adequate power.

Restart Scanner Equipment

Restart the Chairside software, the Dandy laptop, and the Dandy Cart to refresh system processes.

Check Power Connections

Ensure the Dandy laptop or Dandy Cart is plugged into a wall outlet and is actively charging.

Verify Battery Levels

  • Dandy Laptop: Confirm the laptop battery level is above 50%. Scanning while the battery is low or while the laptop is unplugged reduces scanning speed.
  • Dandy Cart: A Dandy Cart powered only by battery enters a low-power state after approximately 2.5 hours of use, which slows scanning.

Manage Scanning Image Count

High image counts can significantly slow down Trios scanner performance. Monitor the image count in the top right corner of the Chairside screen.

Maintain Recommended Counts

For a full arch scan (such as a single-unit posterior crown), keep image counts between 2,000 and 3,000. Image counts may vary depending on the specific case type.

Monitor System Up Time

A Dandy laptop or Dandy Cart that has not been restarted recently may perform poorly due to accumulated system lag.

Check Up Time in Task Manager

  1. Right-click on the computer home screen and select Task Manager.
  2. Select the Performance tab.
  3. Locate the Up time value.
  4. If the Up time exceeds 48 hours, restart the Dandy laptop or Dandy Cart immediately.
