Create Chairside TMJ/TMD Appliance Scans

Overview: This article provides step-by-step instructions for capturing and reviewing intraoral scans specifically for TMJ and TMD appliances using the Chairside workflow.

Capture Scans for TMJ and TMD Appliances

To ensure data processes correctly, capture the scans in the following order:

Scan the Lower Arch

  1. Follow the occlusal, buccal, and lingual scan path to capture the lower arch.

  2. Click Next to proceed to the upper arch scan.

Scan the Upper Arch

  1. Follow the occlusal, buccal, and lingual scan path to capture the upper arch.

  2. Click Next to proceed to the bite capture.

Capture Bite Scans

  1. Capture at least four teeth and 2-3mm of gingiva during the bite scan.

  2. Review the auto-alignment of the bites.

  3. Align bite scans manually if the bites do not auto-align.

Use Scan Page Tools

Use the tools located at the bottom of the scan pages to refine the digital models:

  • Reset: Use this tool to delete the entire current scan.

  • Trim: Use this tool to remove only a specifically selected area of the scan.

  • Lock: Use this tool to lock a selected area of the scan in place.

  • Center: Use this tool to align the scan to a standard occlusal view.

  • Stone: Use this tool to convert the scan to a monochromatic stone appearance for better surface detail viewing.

  • Swap: Use this tool to trade the current scan with a different selected arch scan.

Review and Share Appliance Scans

After capturing the data, click Review Scans to check for missing or distorted areas.

Inspect Scan Data

  • Single View: Click Single to view both the upper and lower arches in occlusion.

  • Side by Side View: Click Side by Side to view the upper and lower arches individually at the same time.

  • Complete View: Click Complete to view a combination of the Single and Side by Side views.

  • Compare View: Click Compare to see current scans next to a previous set of completed scans.

  • HD Scans: Click HD Scans to view the scans in High Definition.

  • Clearance Map: Click Clearance to view a heat map of the occlusal clearance.

  • Annotate Scans: Click Annotate Scans to draw, circle, or add text directly onto the digital scan.

Finalize the Order or Rescan

  1. If the scan quality is sufficient, click Start Ordering to continue placing the appliance order.

  2. If a scan quality is poor, click A Scan Looks Bad? Re-scan It.

  3. Click the pencil icon next to the specific scan that requires a retake.

Share Scans with Patients

  1. Click Share Scans With Patient.

  2. Confirm the practice information if this is the first time sharing scans from this account.

  3. Write a short message to the patient explaining the scan results.

  4. Add any additional context required for the patient to understand the scans.

  5. Choose to send the scans via a link, a printout, or a QR code, then click Share.
