Manage sterilization, disinfection, and cleaning for Dandy equipment

Overview: This guide provides the approved cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization procedures for Dandy scanning equipment.

Approved Cleaning Products

  • 70% isopropyl or ethyl alcohol wipes
  • Hydrogen peroxide wipes
  • Optim wipes
  • Intermediate disinfectant wipes (non-CaviWipes)

General Equipment Care Rules

  • Never autoclave scanner handpieces or scanner bodies.

  • Never immerse any scanner or electronic equipment in liquid.

  • Do not use ultraviolet (UV) light or dry heat sterilizers on any components.

  • Never use CaviWipes on scanner tips or scanner mirrors.

  • Avoid excess liquid near equipment ports, seams, vents, or electrical openings.

  • Always allow all scanning equipment to air dry completely before operation.

Scanner Tip Sterilization Protocols

Manual Pre-Cleaning Procedures

  1. Remove the scanner tip from the scanner wand.

  2. Clean the scanner tip manually using warm soapy water or enzymatic antibacterial soap with a soft brush.

  3. Do not use ultrasonic cleaners during this manual pre-cleaning step.

  4. Rinse the scanner tip thoroughly with clean water.

  5. Dry the scanner tip carefully using a paper towel or soft tissue.

  6. Place each clean scanner tip into an individual, sealed autoclave pouch.

Autoclave and Statim Settings

Standard Autoclave Configurations

  • Option 1: Program the autoclave to 134°C (273°F) for 3 minutes with a 10-minute dry cycle.

  • Option 2: Program the autoclave to 121°C (250°F) for 15 minutes with a 10-minute dry cycle.

  • Alternative Autoclaves: For Midmark or other alternative autoclave systems, manually program these temperature and time settings according to the autoclave manufacturer instructions.

Statim System Instructions

  • Use validated STATIM steam sterilization cycles approved by the manufacturer for dental instrument sterilization.

  • Follow the STATIM instructions for use (IFU) for proper cycle selection, ensuring settings do not exceed scanner tip manufacturer limits.

Sterilization Safety Notes

  • Do not use dry heat or UV sterilizers for scanner tips.

  • Autoclaving does not remove smudges or mirror buildup from the scanner tip.

  • Cleaning the mirror manually is required to maintain proper scan quality and calibration.

Scanner Component Maintenance

Scanner Handpiece Care

  1. Remove the scanner tip before cleaning the scanner handpiece.

  2. Wipe all external surfaces of the scanner handpiece using approved disinfectant wipes.

  3. Prevent liquid from entering scanner vents, seams, ports, or openings.

  4. Allow scanner handpiece surfaces to remain wet according to the disinfectant wipe product instructions.

  5. Let the scanner handpiece air dry completely before reuse.

Scanner Model Specifications

  • TRIOS Wired Scanners: Wipe the scanner handpiece surfaces. Manage scanner mirror care as a separate procedure.

  • TRIOS Wireless Scanners: Wipe the scanner handpiece surfaces. Strictly control moisture around the scanner gasket areas.

  • Dandy Vision Scanners: Wipe the scanner handpiece surfaces only. Do not immerse or autoclave the Dandy Vision scanner handpiece.

Scanner Mirror Maintenance

  • Clean the scanner mirror to ensure optimal scan quality. Autoclaving does not remove mirror smudges.

    • Clean the scanner mirror using an antibacterial soap solution or enzymatic detergent soak with a soft brush.

    • Ultrasonic cleaning is permitted only if the scanner tip is placed loosely in the cleaner. Do not agitate the scanner tip or allow the scanner tip to contact the walls of the ultrasonic cleaner.

    • Wipe and dry the scanner mirror using a microfiber cloth or authentic Q-tip brand cotton applicators only.

Scanner Tip Lifespan Tracking

  • TRIOS Wireless Scanner Tips: Replace after a maximum of 100 sterilization cycles.

  • Dandy Vision Scanner Tips: Replace after approximately 60 sterilization cycles.

  • TRIOS Wired Mirror Tips: Replace every 150 uses or every 6 months.

Scanner Lens and Base Care

  • Scanner Lens: Clean the scanner lens only if the scanner lens is visibly dirty. Wipe the scanner lens gently with a clean microfiber cloth. If required, apply 70% or greater isopropyl alcohol with minimal pressure using a Q-tip brand cotton swab. The scanner tip naturally protects the scanner lens between patient sessions.

  • Scanner Base: Wipe the external surfaces of the scanner base using approved disinfectant wipes. Prevent liquid intrusion into scanner base ports or vents.

Calibration Target Protection

  1. Do not touch the grey optical surface of the calibration target.

  2. Clean the calibration target using a 70% isopropyl alcohol spray.

  3. Dry the calibration target using high-pressure air.

  4. Replace the calibration target immediately if the calibration target becomes contaminated or damaged.

Peripheral and Cart Disinfection

Laptop and Screen Care

  • Use approved disinfectant wipes only to clean laptops and screens.

  • Do not spray cleaning liquids directly onto laptops or hardware screens.

  • Wipe hardware screens gently to prevent screen damage.

  • Keep all liquids away from device ports and vents.

  • Allow laptops and screens to dry fully before operation.
