Overview: This article explains how to manage bite alignment failures in crown and night guard workflows by utilizing expert lab alignment or manual alignment tools.

First Bite Scan Options - Skip Alignment

When aligning the bite proves challenging during the scanning workflow, you can skip this step to expedite the process.

  • Available only for:
    • Crown
    • Night guard

Second Bite Scan Options - Skip Scan

When scanning restorations, only one bite scan is required. The second bite scan is optional. It helps verify the first bite on full arch scans, and is irrelevant for quadrant scans.

To Skip the bite scan - simply click the skip button on the left hand side of the screen.

Manage Bite Alignment Challenges

The scanner provides specific options when the software cannot automatically align the bite scans.

Several aspects could cause the scan not to auto align:

  • Scanning too quickly
  • Malocclusion
  • Moisture
  • Movement by the patient
  • Arch scans are missing buccal information
  • Bite scans not capturing enough gingiva

Select Manual Alignment Options

If the user prefers to resolve the alignment immediately, the scanner offers alternative manual tools.

  1. Click the More options button.

  2. Select Reset Scans to delete current data and restart the bite scan process.

  3. Select Manually Align to open the manual alignment menu and align the bite scans manually.

    • The system will walk them through each step of alignment, starting with the lower arch.
      • On the left - full arch scan previously captured
      • On the right - bite scan that was just captured
      • Identify one tooth to match on each on each of the scans.
        • Positioning Alignment Markers
          • Orient the arch: Rotate the arch in the left window until the buccal surface of the patient's dentition is visible.

          • Match views: Adjust the orientation in the left window to match the quadrant view visible in the right-hand box.

          • Place the first marker: Click the buccal surface of a posterior tooth in the left window. Dandy recommends selecting the first molar along the gumline.

          • Place the second marker: Click the exact same spot on the same tooth within the right-hand window.

          • Verify alignment: The system will automatically align the arch to the bite based on these markers.

    • Repeat with the upper arch scan.

Use Expert Bite Alignment Support

If the bite alignment process fails, the scanner displays a message offering expert assistance to save chair time.

This feature is available for all product when using Chairside.

  1. Locate the message: 'Let us align the bite for you.' on the left side of the screen.

  2. Click the green button labeled Let our experts align for you.

  3. Proceed with the scanning workflow as the lab team will perform the alignment after the order is submitted.
