Overview: This article provides instructions for patients on how to properly wear, clean, and maintain a Dandy removable orthodontic retainer to ensure treatment stability.

Seating the Removable Retainer

Patients should follow these steps to correctly seat the removable retainer in the mouth:

  1. Place the retainer: Gently place the removable retainer in the mouth and use your fingers to guide the appliance into the correct position.

  2. Avoid force: Do not use excessive force or push the removable retainer too far into the mouth.

  3. Secure the fit: Gently bite down on the removable retainer to ensure a stable and proper fit against the teeth.

  4. Follow dental advice: Wear the removable retainer exactly as directed by your dentist, including specific daily wear-time requirements.

Daily Cleaning and Care

Dandy recommends cleaning the removable retainer daily before and after every use to maintain oral hygiene.

  • Rinse after removal: Immediately after removing the removable retainer, rinse the appliance with warm water (not exceeding 45°C/113°F) to remove saliva.

  • Use mild soap: Patients may use antibacterial dish soap to clean debris from the removable retainer.

Recommended Cleaning Agents

For periodic maintenance, patients can use mild over-the-counter (OTC) agents designed for oral devices.

  • Mechanical cleaning: Use a soft-bristle brush to gently clean the inside of the removable retainer.

  • Approved agents: The following agents are safe for cleaning the removable retainer:

    • Dish soap

    • Polident tablets

    • Efferdent tablets

    • 3% peroxide solution

    • 15% bleach solution

    • Mouthwash

Retainer Use Cautions

To prevent damage or warping of the removable retainer, please observe the following restrictions:

  • Limit soaking time: Do not soak the removable retainer in any liquid for more than one hour.

  • Avoid abrasives: Do not use toothpaste or other abrasive cleaning agents, as these can shorten the lifespan of the removable retainer.

  • Temperature control: Do not soak the appliance in water hotter than 45°C/113°F, as high heat will warp the thermoplastic material.

  • Hygiene practice: Dispose of the cleaning solution after every use and rinse the removable retainer thoroughly before placing it back in the mouth.
