Chairside Crown Case Workflow

Overview: This article provides a step-by-step guide for performing a crown workflow during a patient appointment. The instructions cover case setup, material selection, and optimal scanning sequences for fixed restorations.

Case Setup and Selection

To begin the process, the user must configure the case details within the software interface.

Selecting the Restoration Type

  1. Open the case setup menu.

  2. Select the Fixed Restorations option.

  3. Within the Fixed Restorations menu, select Crown.

Identifying Teeth and Materials

  1. Select the specific tooth or teeth that will receive the crown restoration when prompted by the software.

  2. Choose the desired material and shade from the subsequent selection menus.

  3. If the patient requires a fixed restoration combined with a partial denture, refer to the Chairside Combo Case Workflow: Fixed Restoration + Partial article instead.

Scanning Sequence and Capture

The scanning process must follow a specific order to ensure accurate alignment of the dental arches.

Arch Scanning Order

Perform the scanning sequence in the following order:

  1. Lower Arch

  2. Upper Arch

  3. Bite

  4. Prep Scan

  5. Review Scan

  6. Submit Order

Pre-Prep Scan Options

The user may skip a pre-prep scan of the teeth by selecting the Skip pre-prep button. This button must be selected on the menu preceding the scan of the specific prep arch (for example, if the crown is on the lower arch, select the button before scanning the lower arch).

Crown Prep Requirements

Accurate capture of the preparation site is critical for the fit of the final restoration.

Marking and Margin Visibility

  1. Mark the tooth being prepped when the software provides the prompt.

  2. Ensure the scan of the crown prep captures a fully visible margin.

  3. Clearly capture both proximal contacts of the adjacent teeth in the prep scan.

Scanning Technique Tip

When beginning the scan of the crown prep, activate the scanner over the occlusal surface of an adjacent tooth first. Move the scanner slowly over to the crown prep to maintain tracking and accuracy.

Order Finalization

Review the captured data before sending the case to the laboratory.

Reviewing Scans

  1. Navigate to the Review Scans menu.

  2. Confirm the occlusal reduction is sufficient for the selected material.

Submitting the Order

  1. Place the order within the portal.

  2. While not required, the user may include additional clinical photos to assist the laboratory.
