Sleep Apnoea Device Options
Type of Bite Provided
-
Maximum Protrusive Bite
The furthest forward position a patient can push their lower jaw (mandible) relative to the upper jaw.
- I will provide a bite in maximum protrusion (the appliance will be set at approximately 60% of the maximum protrusion)
-
Starting Point Bite
"Starting point" for jaw protrusion is typically the most comfortable position for your patient. After a few weeks, progress is assessed, and titration (advancing the jaw in small increments of 0.5 mm to 1 mm) is performed to find the ideal therapeutic position.
- I will provide a bite in the desired protrusion (the appliance will be set at the desired protrusion)
Vertical Dimension
The measured distance between the upper and lower teeth when the jaw is closed inside the device. Excessive vertical opening can cause jaw muscle discomfort and lower overall patient acceptance.
- Close or open to optimise the device
- Keep it
Elastic Notches
Serve as anchor points for small rubber bands. These bands gently connect the upper and lower pieces of the device, primarily serving to keep the mouth closed and prevent the lower jaw from dropping open while your patient sleeps. They: prevent jaw drop, maintain airway patency, and improve therapy success.
