What is the purpose of a wax rim?
This denture tool serves three purposes: determining the position and arrangement of artificial teeth, verifying the correct jaw alignment and bite, and providing an evaluation of the aesthetics of the denture before finalisation.
Why are wax rims important?
Wax rims play a crucial role in occlusal correction within the denture fabrication process. They serve as a diagnostic and therapeutic tool, helping dentists achieve optimal bite and jaw function for the patient.
One of the most important roles of wax rims is in providing verification of jaw alignment. Confirmation of the correct vertical dimension of occlusion (VOD) and the relationship between the upper and lower jaws ensures proper biting and chewing function. The wax rim also provides a stable base for the final denture, preventing it from moving around in the mouth.
This allows patients to be involved in the denture creation process. They can provide feedback on the appearance of the denture, including the smile line, lip support, and overall facial aesthetics.

Non-Dandy Wax Rims
- Dentists are free to use wax rims that are either fabricated by them or by laboratories other than Dandy
- **Patients who wish to use non-Dandy wax rims to establish the patient's VDO will follow the Copy Denture workflow
Capture Intraoral Scans
Capture all necessary landmarks during the intraoral scan, including:
Depth of buccal and lingual vestibules.
Frena and hamular notches.
Retromolar pads and full palate (including soft palate extension).
Complete Bite Registration and 360 Scan
This stage involves adjusting the Wax Rim and capturing the relationship between the upper and lower jaws.
Adjust the Wax Rim
Evaluate the fit and dimensions of the Digital Wax Rim in the patient's mouth.
Adjust the Wax Rim to achieve the proper Vertical Dimension of Occlusion (VDO), bite, and lip support.
Verify dimensions by evaluating "F", "V", and "S" sounds.
Mark the Wax Rim with smile lines, canine lines, and midlines.
- Create additional markings/carvings (i.e. X's, +'s, etc.) on the occlusal and buccal sides of the wax rim.
- These marks allow the scanner to understand its location when scanning. It also assists in stitching together data.
- These marks also allow us to align the patient's bite once we begin our scans
- If you are using an existing denture:
- Remove and trim off any excess impression material, especially on the occlusal surface.

Make any necessary adjustments to the existing denture to ensure fit and correct VDO.
- If teeth are significantly worn down, use blue mousse to fill the bite on the occlusal surface to verify that the VDO is correct.
Perform the 360 Extraoral Scan
Border mould the periphery of the Wax Rim using PVS material.
- Have the patients perform functional movements.
