Why Impression Material Choice Matters for Denture Fit & Function

Better Denture Fit Starts with the Right Final Impression Material

Selecting the correct material for your final wash impressions is critical to achieving an accurate denture fit, patient comfort, and avoiding costly remakes. This is especially important when scanning pre-existing dentures or bite rims.

Alginate, suitable for preliminary impressions with stock trays, should never be used for final wash impressions. It lacks the dimensional stability and fine anatomical detail required for an accurate, well-fitting prosthesis. In addition, alginate impressions are highly susceptible to distortion during shipping, which further compromises the case. For these reasons, Dandy does not accept alginate mail-in submissions for final wash impressions or any other submission.

🛑When alginate is used in the wash step, we often observe:

  • Overextended borders and poor vestibular capture
  • Increased vertical dimension leading to occlusal errors
  • Misplaced incisal edges and bite inaccuracies
  • Poor fit, patient discomfort, and costly remake delays

✅ For predictable, high-quality results, Dandy recommends:

  • Polyvinyl siloxane (PVS)
  • Polyether
  • Polysulfide

These materials offer superior stability, fine detail reproduction, and are fully compatible with Dandy’s digital impression scanning workflows.
