Essix Retainer

Essix Retainer

An essix retainer is a type of removable orthodontic appliance used to maintain the position of teeth after orthodontic treatment such as braces. Dandy retainers are made of a clear, thermoplastic material that is custom-fitted to the patient's mouth.

Seating the retainer

Seating an essix retainer in the mouth can be done using the following steps:

  1. Ensure that the retainer is clean and free of any debris.
  2. Gently place the retainer in the mouth and use your fingers to guide it into place.
Avoid using excessive force or pushing the retainer too far.
  3. Gently bite down on the retainer to ensure proper fit and stability.
  4. Be sure to wear your retainer as directed by the dentist, which may include
specific instructions on how long to wear it each day and when to remove it.

Cleaning and Care

Dandy recommends cleaning your retainer daily before and after every use. Immediately after removal, use warm water (not to exceed 45°C/113°F) or toothpaste to remove remaining saliva and debris from the retainer.

For periodic removal of debris and maintenance, you may use any mild over-the-counter cleaning agents designed for oral devices. If needed, use a soft bristle brush to clean the inside of your retainer to remove any debris. The following products may be used to clean your retainers: dish soap, Polident, Efferdent, 3% peroxide solution, 15% bleach solution, and mouthwash.

DO NOT SOAK your retainer in any liquid for more than 1 hour.

DO NOT use abrasive cleaning agents (i.e. toothpaste) as it can shorten the life of your retainer.

DO NOT SOAK the appliance in water hotter than 45°C/113°F due to the risk of warping the retainer.

DO dispose of the cleaning solution after every use. Rinse your retainer well prior to use.
