Metal partial dentures are made of a metal framework with plastic or resin teeth attached. They are custom-made to fit the patient’s mouth.
Indications for Use
Metal partial dentures are designed to replace one or more missing teeth in the upper or lower jaw.
Contraindication
Metal partial dentures should not be used if the patient has any allergies to metal or plastic or has severe gum disease.
Potential Risks and Benefits of Metal Partial Dentures
Advise patients of the following:
The benefits of metal partial dentures include improved speech, better chewing ability, and a natural-looking smile. Risks include sore spots, discomfort, and possible damage to remaining natural teeth.
Directions for Use
To ensure proper use of metal partial dentures, dental professionals and patients should follow these steps:
- Rinse the patient’s mouth and the metal partial denture with warm water.
- Place the denture in the patient’s mouth and gently bite down.
- The patient should use their tongue to press the denture into place.
Adjustment recommendations
- Operate the bur at high speed, applying minimal pressure while using water.
- It's important to maintain the temperature using water and air spray. This method helps prevent the formation of micro-fractures. A fine-grit diamond is advisable for adjustments, and air-only handpiece adjustments are not recommended.
- For shaping different surfaces, specific tools are best:
- A football-shaped bur is effective for the occlusal and lingual surfaces, especially on anterior teeth
- A tapered bur is better suited for the buccal and lingual surfaces.
Cleaning and Care
DAILY CLEANING
To clean metal partial dentures, patients should follow these steps:
- Take out the partial denture and clean the teeth and the denture independently. Use only gentle, approved denture pastes on the denture to prevent scratching the acrylic material.
- Rinse the dentures under warm (not hot) water after meals to clear away food particles.
- Brush the dentures daily using a soft denture brush and a cleaner suitable for metal partials, like Polident Antibacterial Cleanser.
- When treating your dentures, brush them with a denture brush to remove any debris, and then soak them in distilled water and a recommended denture solution following the manufacturer's treatment instructions.
- Rinse well with warm water before reinserting.
STORAGE INSTRUCTIONS:
- Store the metal partial dentures in a clean, dry place when not in use. Avoid exposing the metal partial dentures to excessive heat or pressure, which may cause warping or other damage.
- Partial dentures are designed to last several years with proper care and maintenance. Patients should contact your practice for evaluation and repair if dentures become damaged or lose fit.
CAUTIONS:
✗ Avoid soaking your partial dentures in any liquid for longer than the cleaning solution's manufacturer recommends.
✗ Avoid soaking your partial dentures in hard water. Over time, exposure to tap water containing elevated chlorine levels could tarnish the metal.
✗ Do not immerse your partial dentures in water exceeding 45°C/113°F to prevent warping.
✗ Use only approved cleaners for metal partial dentures and avoid abrasive toothpastes, as they can damage the device's appearance.
✓ DO dispose of the cleaning solution after every use. Rinse your partial dentures well before use.
