Overview: This guide provides instructions for patients on how to use, clean, and maintain their custom-fitted Dandy TMJ appliance
Use your TMJ appliance
Dandy TMJ appliances are custom-made devices used to treat temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain. You must wear the appliance while sleeping to maintain the position your dentist prescribed for your TMJ. They consist of a single custom-fitted tray or a dual-arch design. These devices are removable and are only available by prescription from a dentist.
Appliance Selection
The selection of the appropriate TMJ appliance will depend on the patient's and/or doctor's preference. To properly diagnose the case, the dentist may order imaging (e.g., X-rays) and conduct a physical examination. It is key to understand whether the root cause is muscle spasms or joint damage (the joint can erode or move out of proper alignment, cartilage can be damaged, or the joint could be damaged from impact).
Clean and store your appliance
Proper care ensures the longevity of your TMJ appliance.
Cleaning: Brush the TMJ appliance with a toothbrush before every use.
Storage: Dry the TMJ appliance thoroughly and store it in the provided case when not in use.
Remove your appliance correctly
Follow these steps to remove your TMJ appliance safely and avoid breakage:
Upper Appliance: Use both index fingers to pull down on the front area of the upper appliance.
Lower Appliance (if applicable): For a Dawson B-splint, remove the upper appliance first. Then, pull up on the front area of the lower appliance.
Avoid Damage: Do not pull the back of the appliance down, as this may cause the material to break.
Adjust the fit
Do not attempt to adjust the TMJ appliance's fit yourself. Only your prescribing dentist or physician should perform adjustments to the device.
Replace your appliance
A Dandy TMJ appliance typically lasts 2–3 years. The lifespan of the TMJ appliance depends on the material, how often you use it, and how well you care for it.
Signs you need a replacement:
Cracks, tears, or holes appear in the material.
The appliance fits loosely or is deformed.
The material thickness has diminished.
The appliance irritates your mouth.
There is a foul odor or discoloration that cannot be removed by cleaning.
Precautions and potential side effects
Consult your dentist if you experience any of the following while using the TMJ appliance:
Tooth movement or changes in how your teeth bite together.
Soreness in your gums, teeth, or jaw joint.
Difficulty breathing through your mouth.
Excessive salivation.
Contraindication: If you have had surgery to treat TMJ issues, a surgeon must prescribe any further treatment with TMJ appliances.
