Chairside Retainer Workflow

The following workflow applies to patients receiving a retainer who have not completed Dandy Aligner treatment.

For patients who have completed Dandy Aligner treatment, follow the Retainer from Aligners Case Workflow.

Attachments can be removed digitally, so it is unnecessary to remove them before scanning; ensure you note their removal before fabrication.  Digital bracket removal is trickier.  Due to possible distortion and guesswork, 2-3 brackets can be removed digitally.  If the patient presents with an arch or a full mouth of brackets, removal and a rescan are advised.

The outline below is a step-by-step appointment guide for our retainer workflow. Please review our article on Retainer Scanning Best Practices before proceeding.

Case Setup

  • Choose the "Ortho" option when you go to set up your case.
    • Within "Ortho," select "Retainer.".
  • You will then be prompted to select the arch or arches for which the retainer(s) will be made.

Patient Scan

  • Remove wires and metal bands that wrap around molars before scanning.
  • Follow the scanning sequence: Lower Arch > Upper Arch > Bite > Submit Order.
    • Note: The distal surfaces of the posterior-most teeth must be completely captured.

Submit Case

  • Proceed to the "Ordering" menu.
  • Select the material/type of the retainer.
    • You will specify whether this retainer is a Clear, Hawley, or Lingual Fixed retainer.
  • Place your order.
